I'm unfortunately gifted with what appears to be astonishingly bad taste.
That is, if certain works of art are universally declared to be the best thing since toasted sliced bread you'd get good odds that I will be the one who says "I don't get it".
But I suspect I'm not actually as alone as it seems. Go look at any review site, and look for ooh, one of the gazillion Godfather releases (tangent: the longer a film is, the more editions it will have- each infinitesimally different).
Okay good, look there are some that are less than five stars.
Disregard the ones who complain about delivery and resist the urge to bribe their postie so they never get any post on time as punishment for abuse of reviews.
Disregard the "um actually this was better on [laser-disc, VHS, betamax]" hipsters and resist the urge to tie them to a chair and play them home videos that have been transferred onto blu ray just to mess with their prejudice.
No, the ones you want are the ones who just don't get all the fuss.
Here you go- a guy whose title is "
What's all the fuss about?". The gist of their review is that The Godfather (and possibly the sequels, it's ambiguous) is too long, and boring but you should watch them anyway just to say you have.
First comment advises the reviewer to stay way from serious cinema and to go watch Transformers. Transformers! That's a low blow.
Then there's a comment agreeing with the reviewer, followed by a third commenter telling the second to kill themselves. They've not even given it the veneer of discussion, just a blunt "Kill yourself".
There are certain things where the only opinion allowed without having insults flung at you is unwavering assurance of it's brilliance. This bothers me. I've had discussions with bigots, racists, and homophobes that have involved less insults than your average negative review of media that falls into the untouchable category.
Is it really that hard to be polite so someone who simply doesn't like the same things that you do? It doesn't make the thing that you're defending look good to imply that the dissenters are children, or mentally challenged.
There seems to be a growing disbelief in personal taste. Not consciously I'm sure, but the implication is clear- you don't like the stuff I like so what's wrong with you?
